Often a configuration will start with sizing out the number and configuration of the Mailbox servers. This makes sense because much of the cost associated with an Exchange deployment will be based on the amount and type of storage needed to support the Mailbox servers. To approximately gauge the number of other servers you will need, you can use a couple of ratios. These ratios work because of how closely the roles work together. To connect to a mailbox via MAPI or any other protocol, the client must connect to a Client Access Server. To be able to send or receive any e-mail messages, the Hub Transport server must be used. Any mail routing or address lookup activity requires communication with a domain controller. In the .NET Framework 4, you find a revamped and improved version of the data annotations library in the System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations assembly. Data annotations are a set of attributes you can use to annotate public properties of any .NET class in a way that any interested client code can read and consume. Attributes fall in various categories: validation, display, and data modeling. Compared to the validators in Enterprise Library, data annotations are definitely richer and more sophisticated. Another factor in properly sizing an Exchange server is the performance and amount of memory installed. Exchange 2010 is a 64-bit program, so it can use more than 3 GB of memory as a working set and to cache data. Not having enough memory will cause the page file to be heavily used, resulting in higher load on both the processor and the storage I/O; having too much memory is a costly mistake. When determining the type of server and the amount of memory to purchase it is important to understand the memory architecture options available. As mentioned in the previous section, Exchange is not NUMA-aware, meaning it cannot take advantage of the benefits provided by a NUMA-based configuration. Nonetheless, the speed, density, and configuration of memory on an Exchange server is extremely important. When choosing memory be sure to pick a server platform that has enough memory slots to handle the upper end of the amount of memory you will need during the server s life cycle. For example, if you decide that you need 8 GB of RAM today and will need to grow to 32 GB within 2 years, be sure that the server will be able meet your needs. In many cases the more memory DIMMS in the same memory channel the slower the memory must run. In most modern server platforms the following best practices should be followed:

Purchase memory to match the CPU memory speed. Evenly distribute memory across memory channels. Always use memory with ECC to protect against memory errors. Read and follow the server manufacturer guidelines closely on selecting and installing memory.
